Cainsville

This project, outside of Brantford, Ontario,  was designed to feel like a private, water-shaped backyard retreat—one that unfolds as you move through it.

At the heart of the space is a large natural swimming pond with a clean, open swim zone, easy swim-up access, and a gentle beach-style entry where the water meets the landscape. It’s the kind of feature that changes how you use the yard: morning dips, kids floating for hours, and a calm focal point you can enjoy even when you’re not swimming.

From there, the experience keeps going. A stream and cascade sequence carries water through the property and down to a separate koi pond on a lower level—so you’re not just getting one feature, you’re getting a full “walk-the-yard” soundtrack of moving water and small moments to stop, sit, and take it in.

The hardscape and carpentry were designed to match that natural feel: an overhanging cedar deck that brings you right to the pond’s edge, natural stone steps and stepping-stone paths that guide you between zones, and relaxed patio areas finished in peastone with large flagstone pieces mixed in. A rustic fire pit area creates an evening destination, and landscape lighting extends the atmosphere after dark—highlighting key trees, transitions, and the water itself.

Before the Landscape Transformation

Before the transformation, the backyard was a wide open lawn with a strong slope and very little structure to shape how the space could be used. The property had size, privacy, and beautiful rural surroundings, but it lacked definition, water features, and the layered destinations that would later turn it into a more immersive and relaxing outdoor retreat.

During Construction

During construction, the backyard began to shift from a simple sloped lawn into a layered, water-focused retreat. The natural swim pond was excavated and shaped, timber pond walls defined the swim zone, and large boulders, stone steps, and surrounding grades started to establish the flow of the landscape. These images capture the point where the structure of the project was in place and the backyard was beginning to take on its final form.

After Completion

The finished landscape transforms the property into a private, water-shaped retreat that feels layered, immersive, and easy to explore. The natural swim pond becomes the centre of the backyard, with clean swim space, beach-style access, and an overhanging deck that brings the house right to the water’s edge.

Beyond that, the stream, cascade, lower koi pond, stone steps, peastone paths, and fire pit areas create a backyard that unfolds in stages, with each zone offering its own atmosphere, views, and quiet places to stop.
