Kiwanis Park – Kitchener
Set along a river corridor in Ontario’s Waterloo Region, this backyard was designed to feel calm, modern, and effortless—while working with a naturally sloped site.
The pool terrace reads like an outdoor room: warm composite decking underfoot, clean edges, and a minimal enclosure that keeps things safe without visually weighing the space down. From there, the landscape steps with the land—tiered retaining walls create distinct “levels” for lounging, moving, and gathering, connected by wide, comfortable stairs that lead down to a lower meadow.
A dedicated fire pit zone anchors the evenings, giving the backyard a second destination once the sun drops and the pool towels are put away.
Layered planting softens the structure and brings texture through the seasons, while subtle lighting adds a quiet glow—highlighting transitions, improving safety on the steps, and extending the atmosphere well past dusk.
The result: a quietly luxurious outdoor escape that feels intentionally simple, beautifully organized, and perfectly suited to life near the river.
Before the Landscape Transformation
Before the landscape work began, the backyard was a raw, unfinished site with exposed grades, bare soil, and a steep slope falling toward the river. The property had strong natural surroundings and beautiful potential, but it lacked structure, usable outdoor living areas, and comfortable transitions between levels.

During Construction
During construction, the backyard began to take its final shape through major structural work across the slope. Large natural stone retaining walls were installed to create usable terraces, excavation equipment carved out the grades, and the pool, patio, and circulation areas were carefully defined. These photos show the transition from a rough riverside lot into a more organized, multi-level landscape designed for movement, gathering, and views.

After Completion
The finished landscape transforms the steep riverside lot into a calm, modern retreat built around clear levels, strong structure, and easy outdoor living. Tiered natural stone terraces organize the slope, while the pool, composite decking, expansive patio, and covered lounge areas create multiple spaces for relaxing and entertaining. Layered planting, a dedicated fire pit area, and subtle lighting soften the hardscape and bring warmth to the property, making the entire backyard feel polished, functional, and quietly luxurious.
